A short history of Garstang Country Hotel

Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club was established by its family run owners in 1992. It began its life as just a golf course. However, before this, the land was used as farming land.

The original farm was know as Shepher’s Farm. It started as a diary farm in the late 1600’s. The farm house and buildings were made from stone gathered from Greenhalgh castle in Garstang over 300 years ago. The castle was dismantled by Oliver Cromwell’s forces after a long siege and the stone was then available for anyone who could make use of it. Making use of this stone, the family built the farmhouse and farmed on the land until the 1920’s. Dairy farming continued until the building, of the golf course in 1992, and then the hotel in 1995.

When the farmhouse and buildings were dismantled, every effort was kept to maintain the stone for use on the hotel building. The hotel now has many special features dating back to the late 1600’s. This includes the stonework from the castle. The main feature in the reception is the fireplace, where the stone that is in situe is from the archway above the entrance to the stables door. Some of the stonework can be seen to have some white paint. This is from the white wash that was painted on the stones to keep the risk of disease down. The pillars on the doorway, leading from the reception, to the function room are taken from the back door of the farmhouse.

The decision to change from Yeoman Farmers to hotel owners did not come lightly for the family, but it has been a roaring success.

The hotel has spectacular views and lovely surroundings which make it an idyllic setting. The gardens provide a fantastic backdrop for photographs. There is a gazebo, and pagoda, sharing the lawn. There are old trees and colourful flower beds, a pond and river as well as  the golf course.

In 2013 Garstang Country Hotel was awarded the RHS Gold Award in the North West in Bloom Large Accommodation category and has since followed this, with Silver Gilt awards.
